Introducing the Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center
San Diego celebrated a milestone with the dedication of the Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center
On April 14, 2023, a milestone was reached in San Diego with the dedication of the Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center (SPIEC) — a continuation of Sharp HealthCare’s mission to improve the health of our community with a commitment to excellence in all that we do.
“The Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center was conceptualized as a community landmark,” said Chris Howard, President and CEO of Sharp HealthCare. “Designed to put our people and patients first by promoting research, training, workforce development, innovation, education, and technology.”
The SPIEC is home to the James S. Brown Simulation Center, the Terrence and Barbara Caster Institute for Nursing Excellence, the Cox Technology Immersion Lab, a technology demonstration room and more, providing Sharp with the latest tools and ability to enhance its evidence-based practice for the next generation of world-class care.
Groundbreaking for the SPIEC took place on September 30, 2021 and construction continued through March 2023. On that groundbreaking day, the Conrad Prebys Foundation announced their challenge grant of $5 million over five years, amazingly the challenge was met in just the first year.
"This is so much more than a building – it’s an expression of what San Diego can be and the way in which philanthropy can work in this town and the way in which San Diego will become known as one of the best places to find health care for everyone in the community."

The center was made possible with building partners McCarthy and Hanna Gabriel Wells and the generosity of the San Diego community — including donors like Lisa and Ben Arnold and The James M. Cox Foundation — whose gifts were recognized with the Donald N. Sharp Medal for Philanthropy, the highest philanthropic honor the Foundations of Sharp HealthCare can bestow.
Thanks to the Arnold’s, and other individuals and community partners who have supported the ENVISION campaign, the 70,000 square-foot, four-story addition to the Spectrum campus and its new 665-space parking structure, will become the hub for innovation at Sharp.
"For the entire Sharp HealthCare team, this center will be the front door to our organization. The work that will come out of this building will change the delivery of health care, not just for us - but for all."
